Kenya is especially well suited to walking holiday. Climbing Mount Kenya offers more than enough to keep you going for a week, but this is suited more to dedicated hikers than to casual ramblers. Other destinations that offers some great opportunities include Lake Naivasha (a good base for day hikes to Hell’s Gate and Mount Longonot), Kakamega Forest, Saiwa Swamp and Watamu. Even here, however, the options are better suited to independent travelers with a DIY approach than to organized tours.
For tourists looking to see wildlife from the perspective of being on foot and immersed in the environment, there are some concessions that arrange walking (guided) safaris if you are feeling more adventurous. This offers the unique experience of seeing wildlife in a different light - where the sounds, sights and smells will play a more pronounced role in your safari experience.
In the morning, we drive to Bogoria as you enjoy the scenic views of the Great Rift Valley. We arrive Lake Bogoria country club in time for lunch then we drive south to Lake Bogoria game reserve. We get dropped at the park gate and with a game ranger, we start our walk for 3-4 hours towards South of lake Bogoria at the hot springs. From there, our safari vehicle will pick us up and return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay. Meals: L,D
We depart with packed lunches and visit the Flamingos and the hot springs. The springs shoot higher at 15 -18ft in the morning. CAUTION MUST BE TAKEN WHILE WALKING NEAR THE HOT SPRINGS AS THESE ARE SUPER HOT.
Afterwards, we proceed south to the end while we turn to east side of the lake. We spent the whole day walking in open savannah with scattered bushes and we have the chance to see the greater kudu, Thompson’s and Grant’s gazelles as well as zebras, monkeys and baboons. Dinner and overnight stay at Lake Bogoria Hotel. Full board meals.
Early morning departure to Lake Naivasha. Afternoon game viewing walk at the privately owned Crescent Island, which is a peninsula on the Eastern shore of Lake Naivasha. There is a lot of easy to see game e.g. giraffes, wildebeests, waterbucks, elands, zebras and impalas. It is also a heaven for birds with +200 species recorded. Dinner and overnight stay at Sawela lodge. Full board meals.
Early breakfast, then visit the adjacent Hells gate national park with packed lunches. This park can be explored on foot or by cycling- bicycles are available for hire at an extra cost. Hell’s Gate is located just beyond Lake Naivasha. Famous for its natural hot geysers, eagle and vulture breeding grounds, visitors have the choice of driving, walking, camping, and cycling and rock climbing within the park. Special location to view include Fischer’s Tower, formerly a volcano’s plug, the Central Tower and Njorowa Gorges. Two extinct volcanos: Olkaira and Hobley’s are worth a trip. Depart Hells gate at 1500 hrs and drive to Nairobi to arrive by 1700hrs. Drop off at your residence where the safari ends.
